Pickup games offer a great way for people to meet up, stay active, and engage in friendly competition, but organizing them can be tricky. Inspired by a love for sports and community, I set out to design Pickup—a social media app prototype that allows users to create groups, organize games, and see who’s active at various gyms and fields. The goal was to build a tool that not only makes it easier for users to find and join games but also adds a social element where players can post highlights, rate each other’s performance, and level up within the community.

A key challenge in designing Pickup was balancing its many features—group creation, game organization, user activity tracking, and social elements—while keeping the interface simple and intuitive. Researching existing apps helped, but customizing those ideas for Pickup’s unique needs required careful thought to ensure a smooth user experience.

KEY FEATURES

GROUP CREATION & GAME SCHEDULING

Users can easily create groups for different sports, schedule games, and invite others to join, simplifying the process of organizing events.

USER ACTIVITY TRACKING

Real-time location services show which players are active at various gyms or fields, allowing users to join games or plan future meetups.

SOCIAL ELEMENTS

Users can post highlights from games, receive performance ratings, and earn level badges based on their ratings, encouraging community interaction and friendly competition.
